I enjoyed a wonderful plein air event in Ste Genevieve Mo Last week----and had the beautiful reward of receiving "Best of Show " in oils for this 8 x 12 painted at sunset at Chaumette Winery---"Evening Splendor" -----I arrived in Ste Gen and went directly to Charleville winery --------knowing it would be a rush to paint a small piece and enter the "Paint the Wineries " contest-----so I decided to just paint on my own -------I painted this 8 x 10 "Cosmos with a View" as the other artists painting there went off to the evening's reception----I then decided to hurry over to Chaumette ----it's about 5 oclock at this point ----to paint the sunset ---the owner graciously allowed me to stay and paint after closing ------and I relaxed into the warm glow of sunset and long shadows that blanketed the huge view------ relaxed and painted quickly -----is that an oxymoron? In alla prima style---I think it is just what the painter needs!!
As an added bonus I sold ----" Evening Splendor"---- the next day as I was framing it outside the Main Street Inn-----!

Hot Summertime

Hello all
Steamy Missouri summer is upon us----early morning and late evening painting are the times for plein air ----a bit more studio work for me ----yet when I do get out to paint---the humidity makes beautiful atmosphere----so it's a mixed blessing-----

I had hoped to be painting sunflowers in the Clarksville area this week but the growing of sunflowers is a bit sparse this year---I do plan to try to make the Sunday, July 25th reception from 1 to 3 pm at Clarksville glassworks---hopefully with at least one fresh sunflower painting----I will post more information on whether there are any fields of sunflowers later this week!!

I thoroughly enjoyed painting the ranks of hay as they were raked by our friend Howard Schutt on our 15 acres of meadow----he purposefully slowed down his raking to accommodate me----my brush and brain were moving as quickly as possible to capture the classic image.

Summer Studio Sale & Open House 2010

Hello
My summer studio sale is approaching ----- and i'll be painting away until it's here----I've just completed a 4 x 6 foot studio work of the beautiful Virginia Bluebells which bloomed profusely over many acres in the Meramec River Bottom at the Shaw Nature Reserve. My painting buddies Jan Takacs and Charissa Coyle shared the wonderful experience with me as we painted plein air among the blooming beauties. I then took my 12 x 16 plein air study and developed it into the finished studio piece!

Change is in the air

hello all

A big blogging THANKS to those who came out for my Lyon School Plein Air Spring painting workshop and paint out! I foresee that in the future my plein air workshops will become a holistic event of painting, music , food and health ! I was happy that my real food lunch served was as big a hit as my suggested color palette ! My next plein air event is planned for the 3rd weekend of october----I am available for private and group lessons throughout the year---give me a call--573-834-5064
As springtime grows all around us I have been out painting it----I participated in the Augusta Missouri 8th annual plein air event ----over 100 artists painted and sketched the lovely Missouri landscape and quaint town, and we then presented our completed fresh work in a show and sale on the final day.
I have just returned from a plein air workshop in Bennett Springs Missouri, taught by the talented young painter, Joshua Been , from Salida, Colorado. This workshop was hosted by Macreed's Gallery , Lebanon, Mo. I had a wonderful time working hard at gaining new insights into the nuances of impressionistic plein air and studio oils!
I highly recommend Josh as a knowledgable, energetic, and generous teacher.

Hello all----It is officially spring ----I was in Colorado in late February enjoying the amazing vista views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains from 10 miles outside the small town of Westcliffe -----about 1 1/2 hours South of Colorado Springs----Tommy , Emma and I had a wonderful time-----We had great weather----hiked, painted, hiked some more, cross country skied, downhill skied, painted some more, relaxed and soaked up the mountain air and plenty of Colorado sunshine----There was even a little health food store to buy provisions of local grass fed beef, bison and elk, and organic produce in Westcliffe, which made me happy.

I did 6 or so new paintings and sketched quite a bit------so that also made me happy!
